Health Connect in Calcpace
How to turn it on, which apps work, how long it takes and what to do when a run does not show up.
It is the place on Android where health and exercise apps keep your workouts and share that data with each other.
On Android 14 or newer it is already part of the system, in the phone's settings (the path varies a little from brand to brand; search for "Health Connect"). On Android 13 or older, install the Health Connect app from the Play Store.
It only exists on Android. On an iPhone, connect Strava to Calcpace.
The essentials
- 1.In the Calcpace Android app, open Settings › Health Connect › Connect and allow background access.
- 2.Calcpace imports the runs and walks your running app or watch saves to Health Connect, such as Samsung Health, Strava, Nike Run Club, adidas Running and Amazfit.
- 3.A run usually arrives within 15 minutes of finishing, or right away when you open Calcpace.
How to turn it on
- In the Calcpace app, open Settings › Health Connect › Connect.
- On the Health Connect screen, allow what Calcpace asks for: exercise, distance, elevation and heart rate.
- When Calcpace asks, allow background access. Without it, runs only arrive when you open the app.
- Optional: set Calcpace's battery to "Unrestricted" (Android settings › Apps › Calcpace › Battery). In "Optimized" mode, Android may hold the import for an hour or two.
- Optional: allow steps. For runs where the source app does not mark pauses, like Samsung Health and adidas Running, Calcpace uses steps to take off the time stood still.
Right after you turn it on, Calcpace imports the runs and walks from the last 30 days and then, little by little, the runs from the 3 years before that, if your phone supports it and you allow access to past data. Then check in your running app that it is sending workouts to Health Connect: in its settings, look for "Health Connect".
Which apps work
We have already received runs through Health Connect from Samsung Health (and Galaxy Watch), Strava, Nike Run Club, adidas Running, Zepp (Amazfit), Xiaomi Mi Fitness, Haylou Fun, Google Fit, etc.
According to their makers, Garmin Connect, Polar Flow, Coros, Fitbit and Pixel Watch, Map My Run and others also write there. A new one arrives every day.
Huawei Health does not write to Health Connect. With a Huawei watch, connect Huawei to Strava and Strava to Calcpace.
Each app chooses what it sends. Strava, for example, sends only the distance and time of activities with GPS, with no heart rate or elevation.
What Calcpace reads
Only runs, treadmill runs and walks: time, source app and device, title, distance, duration, elevation and average and maximum heart rate during the session.
Steps, only to work out the time stood still, and they are not stored. The route, only if you allow it at the Health Connect prompt, to show the run's map.
It does not read sleep, weight or any other data.
How long it takes
The path of a run made with a watch is watch › watch app › Health Connect › Calcpace, and each step takes its own time:
- The watch has to sync with its app on the phone. Opening the watch app usually does it.
- The source app writes to Health Connect when it syncs. In our test, Nike Run Club wrote about 5 minutes after the run ended and adidas Running about 15.
- Calcpace checks Health Connect every 15 minutes in the background, and right away when you open the app.
My run did not show up
- Open the watch or running app and wait for it to sync.
- Open Calcpace: it checks Health Connect right away.
- In Android settings, open Health Connect › Data and access and see whether the run is under Exercise. If it is not, the problem is in the source app: check that it has permission to write, in Health Connect › App permissions.
- If the run is there and did not arrive, check in Health Connect › App permissions › Calcpace that everything is allowed, including background access.
- Runs from more than 3 years before you turned it on are not imported (30 days if your phone doesn't support it or you didn't allow access to past data). For those, upload the GPX, FIT or TCX file.
- If none of this works, disconnect and connect again in Settings › Health Connect.
Duplicate runs
When two apps record the same run (the watch and Strava, for example), Calcpace keeps just one: runs that start within 3 minutes of each other with a similar distance, or within 2 minutes with a similar duration, count as the same. With Strava connected too, the run from your phone stays, and Strava only fills in what it lacks — the map or the splits — on your own run page.
If I edit or delete a run
- Editing the run in the source app does not always reach Calcpace. Whatever you fix in Calcpace stays the way you left it.
- Deleting in Nike Run Club or adidas Running does not delete it in Health Connect, so it does not delete it here either. Delete it in Calcpace.
- A run you delete in Calcpace does not come back on the next import.
Send runs recorded in Calcpace to Health Connect
In Settings › Health Connect, turn on "Send runs recorded here to Health Connect". Runs you record with the Record button go with start time, distance, pauses and route, and show up in your other apps that read Health Connect.
Disconnecting
These are three different things:
- Stop importing
- Settings › Health Connect › Disconnect. It applies to all your phones, and runs already imported stay in your account.
- Take away the permission
- In Android settings, Health Connect › App permissions › Calcpace › Remove all permissions.
- Delete what already came in
- Delete each run in Calcpace, or delete the account, which takes everything with it.
Signing out on the phone also stops the import on that phone. When you sign in again, connect again.
